About

Understanding Tranche

Bastien Tessanne
Display
Open Source

Tranche font is a display typeface with block construction, bitmap aesthetics, and square proportions designed for pixel-perfect, sliced applications. The grid-based design and pixel styling create systematic, digital typography. This square bitmap block display typeface proves valuable in pixel gaming graphics, sliced digital branding, systematic retro design, and applications requiring pixel block character. The French slice name suggests sectioned portions. Tranche serves designers creating systematic pixel experiences. Pair with complementary pixel fonts.

Tranche was designed by Bastien Tessanne. The typeface shows dedication to typographic detail, visible in its letterform construction and optical balance.

As a Display typeface in the Vox-ATypI Graphic classification, Tranche features tight spacing optimized for large point sizes and exaggerated contrast, weight, or decorative features. These optical characteristics make it well-suited for brand logotypes and wordmarks.

Tranche is available in a single weight, offering focused typographic consistency across digital and print workflows, with 3 font pairings curated. Standard Latin character coverage serves the majority of Western typographic workflows.

Accessibility & Usability

50
Accessibility Score
Adequate Accessibility

Tranche: Accessibility Considerations

Tranche falls in the moderate accessibility tier, working best at medium-to-large sizes where its letterforms remain clearly differentiated. Decorative features may reduce legibility for users with cognitive disabilities. Always provide sufficient size contrast between display and body text.

Tranche Legibility Characteristics

Tranche draws legibility from its tight spacing optimized for large point sizes and exaggerated contrast, weight, or decorative features. These characteristics help readers distinguish similar glyphs such as I, l, and 1 at a range of sizes.

Tranche's Readability

Designed exclusively for sizes above 24 pt. Display faces sacrifice small-size legibility for visual impact and personality at headline scale. Use at 16 px minimum for body text, and maintain 1.5 line-height to support comfortable reading rhythm.

Tranche's Visual Fatigue and Adaptability

Tranche provides a focused weight range that maintains consistent typographic color across paragraphs. Balanced stroke modulation keeps visual noise low during sustained reading sessions.

Tranche Accessibility Recommendations

Maintain a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large text when setting Tranche. Use font sizes of at least 16 px for paragraph copy and line spacing of 1.5 or greater. Test Tranche at 200% browser zoom to confirm line breaks and layout integrity remain intact.

Design Tips for Tranche

Anchor with a neutral text serif or sans-serif. The display face should carry personality while the text face carries readability. A focused set of pairings helps designers find compatible companions for Tranche. Establish hierarchy through size, spacing, and color rather than multiplying font families. Serve Tranche in WOFF2 format for optimal load performance and broad browser compatibility.
