Sputnik: History & Characteristics

Frank Baranowski

Display

Open Source

Sputnik font is a display typeface merging bold cartoon character with cool funny personality and outline variations. The playful letterforms project approachable energy suitable for children's brands, casual entertainment, and retro-inspired marketing campaigns. Outline options enable creative dimensional effects while cartoon construction engages broad audiences. Effective for animation studios, space-themed products, and nostalgic celebrations. Complements rounded sans-serif supporting text.

Sputnik comes from the work of Frank Baranowski. The typeface reflects a focus on typographic detail, visible in its letterform construction and optical balance.

As a Display typeface in the Vox-ATypI Graphic classification, Sputnik features tight spacing optimized for large point sizes and exaggerated contrast, weight, or decorative features. These optical characteristics make it well-suited for editorial magazine covers and chapter openers.

Sputnik is available in a single weight, offering focused typographic consistency for both digital and print applications, with 4 curated font pairings available. Standard Latin character coverage serves the majority of Western typographic workflows.
