Combat: History & Characteristics

Velvetyne

Serif

Open Source

Combat font is a bold contemporary serif by Velvetyne that brings sharp, aggressive energy to modern display typography. This cool typeface combines serif conventions with edgy details and strong presence, making it effective for music festival graphics, streetwear branding, and bold editorial statements. Combat's sharp terminals and confident weight suit logo design, poster headlines, and brand identities seeking confrontational visual energy without abandoning typographic sophistication. The contemporary character positions it between classical serif authority and modern display expressiveness. Designers seeking alternatives to bold transitional serifs with more attitude will appreciate Combat's distinctive edge. Works well alongside neutral sans-serifs to balance the intensity.

Combat comes from the work of Velvetyne. The typeface reflects a focus on typographic detail, visible in its letterform construction and optical balance.

As a Serif typeface in the Vox-ATypI Classicals classification, Combat features bracketed or hairline serifs terminating each stroke and modulated stroke contrast from axis of stress. These optical characteristics make it well-suited for brand identities conveying authority and heritage.

Combat is available in a single weight, offering focused typographic consistency spanning screen and print contexts, with 3 font pairings curated. Standard Latin character coverage serves the majority of Western typographic workflows.

Accessibility Score

Good Accessibility

Combat Accessibility Profile

Combat achieves a good accessibility rating, performing reliably for both paragraph text and interface elements at standard sizes. High-contrast Didones can cause halation for readers with astigmatism. Prefer Garalde or Transitional cuts at text sizes for inclusive readability.

Reading Combat: Legibility Factors

Combat draws legibility from its bracketed or hairline serifs terminating each stroke and modulated stroke contrast from axis of stress. These characteristics help readers distinguish similar glyphs such as I, l, and 1 at a range of sizes.

Combat's Readability

Serifs guide horizontal eye movement along the baseline, making text sizes above 9 pt highly readable in print. On screen, hinting quality determines legibility below 14 px. Set body text at 16 px or larger on screen, with line heights between 1.4 and 1.6 for sustained reading comfort.

Combat for Long-Form Content

Combat provides a focused weight range that maintains consistent typographic color across paragraphs. High stroke contrast can cause halation for some readers, so pair with ample line spacing on bright backgrounds.

Combat Accessibility Recommendations

Maintain a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large text when setting Combat. Use font sizes of at least 16 px for paragraph copy and line spacing of 1.5 or greater. Test Combat at 200% browser zoom to confirm line breaks and layout integrity remain intact.

Getting the Most from Combat

Pair with geometric or grotesque sans-serifs for contrast. Avoid pairing two serifs from the same Vox sub-class to prevent visual redundancy. A focused set of pairings helps designers find compatible companions for Combat. Establish hierarchy through size, spacing, and color rather than multiplying font families. Serve Combat in WOFF2 format for optimal load performance and broad browser compatibility.
